Economic mixproof valves

Alfa Laval offers two double-seal mixproof valves: The Alfa Laval SMP-BC and the aseptic version, SPC-BCA. The SMP valves enable the flow of two different media through the same valve simultaneously without any risk of cross-contamination. This increases operating efficiencies and significantly reduces operating costs.

High application flexibility

Based on a modular structure, SMP mixproof valves have several valve bodies and components that can be combined in various ways. These self-draining mixproof valves can, for instance, be configured as stop valves and changeover valves.

SMP mixproof valve range

Aseptic version

The aseptic version of Alfa Laval’s SMP mixproof valve is called SMP-BCA, which is designed for use under mixproof aseptic conditions and sterilization involving high temperatures.

The straight forward design keeps liquids separate by using two seals on the same plug, with a leakage chamber in between.

The PTFE / rubber diaphragm following the movement of the plug in the upper section of the valve body ensures that there is no increase in the concentration of microorganisms in the product during processing.

Construction

The construction of the Alfa Laval SMP mixproof valve range varies, depending on the valve model (SMP-BC and SMP-BCA).

The SMP-BC mixproof valve consists of an actuator, bonnet, plug and valve bodies. Three versions are available: a shut-off valve with one valve body, a shut-off valve with two valve bodies, and a changeover valve with three valve bodies. Clamp rings and a plug clip system secure the valve bodies to the actuator. The clamp ring enables you to turn the valve in any direction.

The SMP-BCA mixproof valve consists of the same valve components as the SMP-BC, but is fitted with a PTFE/EPDM diaphragm designed to prevent contamination from external sources and to withstand high temperature. This makes the SMP-BCA ideal for use under aseptic conditions.

Operating principles

The Alfa Laval SMP mixproof valves are controlled from remote location by means of compressed air. The SMP-BC and SMP-BCA mixproof valves have different operating principles, which are described below.

SMP-BC mixproof valve

The SMP-BC mixproof valve is fitted with two small pneumatic normally open (NO) valves, a detecting valve and a CIP-valve.

The valve plug has two seals, which form an atmospheric leakage chamber. Any product leakage is discharged through the detecting valve. The leakage chamber may be cleaned by supplying CIP into the detecting valve. The SMP-BC is insensitive to water hammer in the product line above the plug.

For changeover valves, a single seal plug separates the lower product lines.

SMP-BCA aseptic mixproof valve

The SMP-BCA aseptic mixproof valve is a normally closed (NC) valve with a proven PTFE/EPDM diaphragm. The special designed aseptic diaphragm hermetically seals against intrusion from the atmosphere and ensures full protection against the effects of microorganisms. It also prevents product build-up on the product contact surface.

The valve plug has two seals, which form an atmospheric leakage chamber. Any product leakage is discharged through the detecting valve. The leakage chamber may be cleaned by supplying CIP into the detecting valve.

Two small pneumatic normally open (NO) valves enable a sterile barrier to be established in the leakage chamber through the continuous application of steam. The chamber must be clean and sterile when the main valve is closed.

For changeover valves, a single seal plug separates the lower product lines but does not require the use of a sterile barrier in the leakage chamber.

Unique Mixproof Horizontal Tank Outlet Valve specially designed for horizontal mounting directly on the tank wall. It improves cleanliness of the horizontal tank connections and ensures that no area of the tank inlet or tank outlet is left uncleaned. The valve insures 100% drainability of the tank and for the 4” and 6” it offers the ability to handle particles up to 45 mm.
 

Unique Mixproof Large Particle Valve. For applications with very large particles or highly viscous fluids, this valve offers the same basic advantages as Unique mixproof valves but are specially designed with large openings up to 45 mm in diameter.

The Alfa Laval Unique mixproof valve is a normally closed (NC) valve that is controlled from a remote location by means of compressed air.

To separate the two liquids, the valve has two independent plug seals. The space between the two seals forms an atmospheric leakage chamber. In the rare case of accidental product leakage, the product flows into the leakage chamber and is discharged through the leakage outlet.

When the valve is open, the leakage chamber is closed. The product can then flow from one line to the other without spillage. The valve can easily be cleaned and protected against the effects of water hammer according to the specific requirements of the process and the configuration of the valve. (There is no product spillage during valve operation).

Unique mixproof valve - How it works

SpiralClean system

To ensure the hygienic operating condition of its Unique mixproof valve range, Alfa Laval offers its SpiralClean system to clean the upper and lower balanced plugs and leakage chamber of the valves. Using less cleaning fluid, utilities and time, SpiralClean cleans more thoroughly and efficiently than conventional cleaning devices. All external CIP systems for Unique mixproof valves include the SpiralClean design as standard.

Another big benefit: SpiralClean enables the Unique mixproof valve to operate under aseptic-like conditions, creating a steam barrier to the atmosphere upon applying steam to the CIP pipes.

Unique Mixproof Horizontal Tank Valve

The Unique Mixproof HT valve provides a state of the art solution when there is no CIP pressure or flow from the tank side to clean the seat and plug. The valve is self-cleaning, thanks to two Cleaning-in-Place (CIP) nozzles. The first nozzle is designed specifically for plug cleaning. This double-acting nozzle projects cleaning solution through the tank connection, ensuring complete cleaning of the seat contact surfaces as well as the shadow area of the tank port.

The second is a rotating CIP nozzle incorporated into the unit for optimum cleaning of the full-bore leakage chamber. The design of the single valve body makes it suitable to weld directly on the tank or to connect it via a Tri-clamp.

The 4” and 6” models feature a 45-mm opening, which enables the passage of very large particles or efficient handling of high viscosity fluids.

Unique Mixproof Large Particle Valve

Unique Mixproof LP is remote-controlled by means of compressed air. The valve is a normally closed (NC) valve. It is as standard supplied seat lift, which enables handling of two different products at the same time, or safe handling of one product while seat-lift cleaning operations are being conducted in the other portion of the valve – all without any risk of cross-contamination.

The 6” valve is as standard also equipped with balanced lower plug to protect against the effects of high pressure and water hammer. The 4” valve is, in order to accommodate 1½” (45mm) particles, not supplied with balanced lower plug. The 4” is however as standard equipped with a boost actuator to accommodate a product pressure of up to 10 bar.

WORKING PRINCIPLE

Unique is remote-controlled by means of compressed air. The valve is a NC valve.

The valve has two independent plug seals forming a leakage chamber between them under atmospheric pressure during every working condition. In case of rare accidental leaking of product, this will flow into the leakage chamber and be discharged through the leakage outlet. When the valve is open, the leakage chamber is closed. The product can then flow from one line to the other.

The valve can be cleaned and water hammer protected to any level, according to the needs in the specific process. There is virtually no spillage of product when operating the valve.

APPLICATION

Unique Basic has the basic components for low cost and clean-in-place (CIP) solutions, providing significant safety and leakage detection:

  • Actuator without seat lift
  • Unbalanced plugs
  • No SpiralClean of leakage chamber or plugs

Typical applications could be water inlet for water push of product or CIP supply and return lines. Not suitable in application with risk of pressure shocks or sticky products. Unique Basic mixproof valve is for low-cost solutions.

SPIRALCLEAN

The Unique concept offers the Alfa Laval SpiralClean system to clean the upper and lower balanced plugs and leakage chamber, helping to meet the high hygienic standards of the sanitary flow industry. The system cleans more efficiently, using less cleaning fluid by ensuring that a directional flow of CIP fluid reaches all the surfaces in less time than with conventional systems. All external CIP systems for Unique include the SpiralClean design as standard. The SpiralClean system allows the Unique mixproof valve to run under aseptic-like conditions. If you apply steam to the CIP pipes, this will form a steam barrier to the atmosphere.

Construction

The unique mixproof valve concept is based on a series of base components, including valve body, valve plug, actuator and cleaning options and accessories that support a wide range of applications. Using these components, you can build a Unique mixproof valve to match your exact process requirements.

To facilitate maintenance, the Unique mixproof valve also features leakage detection holes that provide advance notification of wear or damage to static o-rings. Operators can visually inspect the valve at any time without having to disassemble it.

Operating principle

The Alfa Laval Unique mixproof valve is a normally closed (NC) valve that is controlled from a remote location by means of compressed air.

To separate the two liquids, the valve has two independent plug seals. The space between the two seals forms an atmospheric leakage chamber. In the rare case of accidental product leakage, the product flows into the leakage chamber and is discharged through the leakage outlet.

When the valve is open, the leakage chamber is closed. The product can then flow from one line to the other without spillage. The valve can easily be cleaned and protected against the effects of water hammer according to the specific requirements of the process and the configuration of the valve. (There is no product spillage during valve operation).

SpiralClean system

To ensure the hygienic operating condition of its Unique mixproof valve range, Alfa Laval offers its SpiralClean system to clean the upper and lower balanced plugs and leakage chamber of the valves. Using less cleaning fluid, utilities and time, SpiralClean cleans more thoroughly and efficiently than conventional cleaning devices. All external CIP systems for Unique mixproof valves include the SpiralClean design as standard.

Another big benefit: SpiralClean enables the Unique mixproof valve to operate under aseptic-like conditions, creating a steam barrier to the atmosphere upon applying steam to the CIP pipes.

CONCEPT

Unmatched flexibility is the concept of this simple mixproof valve. Its modular design provides the perfect solution for all mixproof tank outlet applications involving non-compatible fluids within the pipeline and tank. The body and outlet can be easily positioned by the loosening of a single clamp. The body is connected to a flange that is welded directly to the tank.

The tank flange maintains TÜV approval AD 2000 and comes with an EN10204 (3.1) inspection certificate 3.1. The Unique TO is available in two inch to four inch outlet (ISO tube) sizes. The design of the valve allows it to be installed in a horizontal configuration.

WORKING PRINCIPLE

The Unique TO is remotely controlled by means of compressed air. The valve is supplied in a normally-closed (NC) configuration. The valve maintains two independent plug seals, forming a leakage chamber which is open to the atmosphere at all times. In the unlikely event of a leak, product will enter into the leakage chamber and be discharged through a leakage chamber outlet. As the valve opens, the leakage chamber closes allowing product to flow from the tank to the pipeline. The valve is protected from any pipeline water hammer thanks to a balanced plug design that limits the speed of the seating of valve plug when closing with the direction of the product flow. The valve has multiple cleaning options, configurable to the needs of the specific application. There is practically no spillage of product when operating the valve.

APPLICATION

Unique TO meets the typical demands of a process valve in the sanitary industry. It is also suitable for products with solids. Cleaning of the plugs and seats are performed by means of seat lift during normal cleaning procedure. This valve also includes a balanced plug in the pipeline that protect against pressure shock in the pipeline when closing in the direction of product flow. Features include an actuator with balanced seat lift integrated and standard balanced plug in pipeline. Unique TO is the choice for standard solutions.

Unique TO with external cleaning meets the highest demands for hygienic processing. SPIRALCLEAN

The Unique TO offers the Alfa Laval SpiralClean system to clean the balanced plug and leakage chamber, helping to meet the high hygienic standards of the sanitary industry. All external clean-in-place (CIP) systems for Unique include the SpiralClean design as standard. Another benefit of the SpiralClean system is that it allows the Unique TO to operate under near-aseptic conditions by applying steam to the CIP pipes, thereby forming a steam barrier to the atmosphere.

OPTIONS

The Unique TO is designed with user flexibility in mind. The user can choose additional options as warranted by the application (i.e. stricter hygienic requirements, challenging downstream flow characteristics). Unique Mixproof Horizontal Tank Valve

The Unique Mixproof HT valve provides a state of the art solution when there is no CIP pressure or flow from the tank side to clean the seat and plug. The valve is self-cleaning, thanks to two Cleaning-in-Place (CIP) nozzles. The first nozzle is designed specifically for plug cleaning. This double-acting nozzle projects cleaning solution through the tank connection, ensuring complete cleaning of the seat contact surfaces as well as the shadow area of the tank port.

The second is a rotating CIP nozzle incorporated into the unit for optimum cleaning of the full-bore leakage chamber. The design of the single valve body makes it suitable to weld directly on the tank or to connect it via a Tri-clamp.

The 4” and 6” models feature a 45-mm opening, which enables the passage of very large particles or efficient handling of high viscosity fluids.

The Unique Mixproof CP-3 valve has a lower balanced plug to avoid product mix, even in the event of pressure spikes in the system. The upper plug can be configured with or without a balancer depending on the required performance.

SpiralClean

The Alfa Laval SpiralClean system makes it possible to clean the upper and lower plugs and leakage chamber by external CIP connections. The

system cleans more efficiently, uses less cleaning fluid by ensuring that a directional flow of CIP fluid reaches all the surfaces in much less time than with conventional systems.

Spiral Clean of the leakage chamber is not depending on a special type of plug configuration, but can be added to any of the available plug configurations.

WORKING PRINCIPLE

Alfa Laval Unique Mixproof CP-3 is remote-controlled by means of compressed air. The valve is a normally closed (NC) valve. The valve has two independent plug seals, forming a leakage chamber between them under atmospheric pressure during every working condition.

In case of rare accidental leaking of product, this will flow into the leakage chamber and be discharged harmlessly through the leakage outlet, without any threat of product mixing or cross contamination. When the valve is open, the leakage chamber is closed. The product can then flow from one line to the other. The valve can be cleaned and water hammer protected to any level according to the needs in the specific process. There is virtually no spillage of product when operating the valve.

Modular design – flexible valve installations

The Unique PMO mixproof range is constructed from a series of base components that provide flexible configurations to fit your application requirements. Because the same valve body is utilized in all standard mixproof valve configurations, upgrading is fast with no need to remove the valve body; simply exchange the plugs, actuators and other minor elements. The benefit is an ease of interchangeability exclusive to Alfa Laval where any installed standard PMO valve can be easily upgraded from PMO to PMO – F, to PMO Plus® to PMO Plus – CP.

Construction

The Alfa Laval Unique PMO mixproof valve consists of a valve body, two independent balanced valve plugs/seals, actuator with seat lift, position-detectable upper and lower valve seats and a yoke-mounted, external sensor.

Operating principle

The Alfa Laval Unique PMO mixproof valve is a normally closed (NC) valve that is controlled from a remote location by means of compressed air.

To separate the two liquids, the valve has two independent plug seals. The space between the two seals forms an atmospheric chamber.

When the valve is open, the chamber is closed. The product can then flow from one line to the other without spillage. The valve can easily be cleaned and protected against the effects of water hammer according to the specific requirements of the process and the configuration of the valve.

All Unique PMO mixproof valves are equipped with Alfa Laval ThinkTop valve sensing and control devices, which fulfill regulatory requirements for detection of seat lift and feedback signal.

THE PASTEURIZED MILK ORDINANCE (PMO)

Paragraph 15p(B) of the Pasteurized Milk Ordinance (PMO) outlines the requirements for the use of mixproof valves in applications involving milk products and cleaning solutions to ensure the hygienic and safe separation of dairy products flowing concurrently through the same valve.

The PMO requires that:

  • Both valve seats must be position detectable
  • The leakage chamber, found in all mixproof valves, must have the same cross-sectional area as the valve body port connections
  • The actuator must be fail-safe by spring-to-close

In 2007, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) changed the PMO to allow clean-in-place (CIP) solution to clean one valve seat while product is flowing in the opposite housing. This change virtually eliminates CIP downtime, so processors can run continuous dairy operations and increase production.

In 2008 the FDA issued memorandum M-b-356, confirming that Alfa Laval’s Unique PMO Plus mixproof valve is Pasteurized Milk Ordinance paragraph 15p(B) compliant.

CONCEPT

This Unique PMO Plus Mixproof valve is based on the well proven and exceptionally flexible design of the Unique PMO Mixproof valves from Alfa Laval. It meets the demands from the 3-A/PMO (Pasteurized Milk Ordinance paragraph 15p(B)) standards saying that all movements have to be detectable, as well as the vent tube has to have the same or greater area than the connection pipe. Furthermore, the Unique PMO Plus meets the FDA demands for seat lift compliance M-b 356. This allows CIP flow to clean one chamber while product is running in the other chamber, thus eliminating CIP downtime. Finally, the actuator is fail-safe by spring-to-close.

WORKING PRINCIPLE

Unique PMO Plus is remote-controlled by means of compressed air. The valve is a normally closed (NC) valve. The valve has two independent plug seals, forming a leakage chamber between them which is at atmospheric pressure or less during every working condition. In the rare case of fluid passing a valve seat, the fluid will enter the leakage chamber and be discharged through the leakage outlet. When the valve is open, the leakage chamber is closed.

BUILD-UP

This PMO Plus edition of the Unique Mixproof valve is a high-end valve with regards to process security as well as from a sanitary point of view. The valve plugs are always balanced in both upper and lower valve body, securing no sensitivity to pressure spikes. The lower and upper seats are position-detectable by the ThinkTop® and a yoke-mounted, external sensor.
