Innovative inline powder-liquid mixer

The Alfa Laval Hybrid Powder Mixer is a patented hygienic mobile unit that uses a single standard motor to disperse powders into liquids quickly and efficiently, and to pump the combined solution. By combining pump and powder dissolving technologies, this versatile, easy-to-use mixer produces homogeneous products at high productivity while delivering significant energy savings.

Designed for batch production, it is the only inline powder mixer with a single motor drive that is able to disperse solids into liquids uniformly while simultaneously pumping the process liquid at pressures of up to 5 bar. It is an excellent choice for use in a wide variety of dairy, food and beverage powder mixing applications. It is also capable of producing recombined milk with more than 50% dry matter.

In addition, when used in combination with an Alfa Laval Rotary Jet Mixer, the Hybrid Powder Mixer may also be used as part of an efficient cleaning-in-place (CIP) system.

Energy-efficient powder-liquid mixing

Energy savings and reduced CO2 emissions are two key advantages. Comparable mixing systems require up to four separate electric motor drives. When used with the Rotary Jet Mixer, the Hybrid Powder Mixer only requires one motor, significantly reducing energy consumption.

High rate of dynamic shear mixing

Thanks to its efficient suction, it outperforms comparable powder mixers by dissolving solids in liquids at a much higher rate. It pre-blends the powder and liquid before the mixture enters the high-shear stage, ensuring faster and more effective dissolution without damaging the product.

Lower total cost of ownership

It reduces the total cost of ownership by cutting installation, operating, and maintenance costs, while raising hygienic standards and allowing additional equipment to be integrated without extra pumps.

Construction

The Hybrid Powder Mixer consists of a two-stage pump with one rotor-stator stage and one pump stage, fitted with a motor equipped with a frequency converter. A funnel introduces powder via an injector system, and the entire unit is mounted on a stainless steel frame.

Operating Principle

Installed in a circulation loop connected to a batch tank, this mobile unit features a built-in table for easy handling of heavy powder bags. The operator only needs to control one valve during mixing, while the injector creates an under pressure to draw powder into the rotor-stator, resulting in a homogeneous mixture.

Stage 1

After adding liquid to the tank, the mixer circulates the liquid. In tanks larger than 1–2 m³, it is recommended to install an Alfa Laval Rotary Jet Mixer to enhance efficiency. Powder is added via the funnel and drawn into the rotor-stator when the valve is opened.

Stage 2

An impeller pumps the mixture back to the tank, while some is recirculated through the injector to maintain dynamic suction for continuous mixing.

Cleaning

Once mixing is complete, the unit can function as a discharge pump or, when paired with the Rotary Jet Mixer, as a CIP pump to clean the tank.

System Integration

When combined with an Alfa Laval Rotary Jet Mixer, the entire system dramatically reduces energy consumption and investment costs.

Applications

Ideal for dairy, beverage, and food powder mixing applications. It is also suitable for incorporating thickeners, stabilizers, and emulsifiers in precise concentrations and for producing recombined milk with over 50% dry matter.

Working Principle

The patented unit disperses powders into liquids and pumps the solution at outlet pressures of up to ~72.5 psi (5 barg) using a single motor. Its dual-stage pump and injector system ensure high productivity and uniform mixing.
