The Alfa Laval Vortex Mixmate is a chemical blending barrel of exceptional quality that is specifically engineered for the most rigorous industrial applications. For the safe, rapid, and consistent mixing and dispensing of small quantities of hazardous liquids, it is designed and manufactured.
The Alfa Laval Vortex Mixmate is a combination of a 379 liter (100 gallon) stainless steel cylindrical container, a safety baffle, and a work table that are designed to mitigate the risk of liquid splash-back during combining. Additionally, it is equipped with a stainless steel lockable hinged safety covering that includes a viewing window.
Oil and Gas
To help keep the pH level of drilling mud between 10 and 12pH, things like caustic soda, caustic potash, and soda ash are added. In water-based drilling mud systems, high alkaline conditions are needed to break up bentonite, make the mud thicker, and speed up the reaction of lignosulfonates and other “thinning” agents. When these chemicals are mixed with mud during digging, they neutralize acid gases that can be found in rock formations.
Usually, additives come in bags of powder or pellets that need to be mixed right away with fresh water on the drilling site to make very concentrated solutions that are then mixed into the drilling fluid.
Mixing caustic and soda ash with water releases a lot of heat, which leads to processes that make heat. So, the solutions that are made are hot, very acidic, and highly alkaline. They can also burn your skin and eyes if you aren’t careful while making them. Every year, oil field workers handle about 1.5 to 1.8 million sacks of caustic. There is a chance of getting hurt when dealing and mixing these mud components.
Because these chemicals are so toxic, the Alfa Laval Vortex Mixmate is made of high-quality parts that can handle them. It’s meant to make mixing and dispensing drilling mud solutions quick, regular, and uniform, while also keeping people from getting accidentally exposed.
The Alfa Laval Vortex Mixmate is made up of a 100-gallon stainless steel drum with a worktable and a safety baffle that is meant to make liquid splash-back much less likely while mixing. Alfa Laval Vortex Mixmate has a stainless steel safety cover that can be locked and hinged, with a window for watching. The unit has a 1.5″ water inlet and discharge ports with ball valves made of stainless steel, a 3″ overflow port, and a turbine impeller and shaft made of stainless steel that are driven by a four-horsepower motor. The whole set comes in a neat package and is put together on a powder-coated carbon steel skid base with table support legs.

The Lobestar Mixing Nozzle® insert, located inside the Lobestar Mixing Eductor® sub-component of the shear-mixer, efficiently pumps drilling mud. The pressure drop across the nozzle generates a high-velocity fluid stream and a powerful vacuum, allowing for maximal solid or liquid additive loading. The Lobestar Mixing Nozzle® generates jet streams with rotating vortex rings, resulting in overlapping plumes. This flow pattern creates an energetic fluid boundary layer, leading to turbulence shearing, quick hydration of additives, and uniform dispersion. The unique diffuser insert downstream of the nozzle maximizes pressure recovery. This allows the combined fluid to go further and at higher elevations through the pipework, downstream from the mixer, and back to the mud pits.
The system’s radial premixer “pre-wets” chemical additive particles, preventing them from clumping together and forming fish eyes or microgels in the combined fluid. The fluid is passively steered from the shear-mixer’s primary input to the radial premixer, resulting in a swirling flow pattern and an air-fluid vortex. The vortex evenly distributes additive particles into a low-pressure, whirling fluid eye, effectively pre-wetting them before being sheared into drilling mud by the Lobestar Mixing Nozzle®.
