Clamp butterfly valveClamp butterfly valve

Clamp butterfly valves (CBFV) are on/off routing valves designed for manual or automatic operation in sanitary stainless steel fluid handling systems. Easy to install, operate and maintain, the modular hygienic valves deliver more uptime at reduced costs.

Related Industries:

Agriculture processing, Food Processing, Beverage Processing, Biotechnology, Dairy Processing, Pharmaceutical Production, Personal and Home Care

Full range of sanitary clamp butterfly valves

The Alfa Laval clamp butterfly valve (CBFV) range meets the full spectrum of requirements at working pressures from full vacuum to 10 bar and at temperatures ranging from -10°C to +95°C. Made of 304L or 316L stainless steel, it has an internal surface finish of Ra ? 0.8 ?m for hygienic performance and cleanability. The valve comes with EHEDG certification.

Designed for use in a wide range of stainless steel fluid handling systems, these valves are compatible with the Alfa Laval LKB butterfly valves and can be built to comply with virtually any installation standard. The clamp butterfly valve is available in six sizes in respectively DIN (DN25 to DN100) and ISO (1” to 4”).

More production uptime, less downtime

The clamp butterfly valve features a practical in-line design that ensures reliable and versatile performance. Assembly and installation is easy. Thanks to the patented clamp design, it is possible to retract the seal sideways when the valve is welded into the pipe system. It simply requires a small retraction of the pipes. This makes installation simpler with fewer connections and enables faster seal replacement than conventional butterfly valves.

The CBFV is perfect for applications where frequent maintenance is required. Maintenance is made easy by the counterhold nuts, which make it possible to disassemble the valve using only an Allen key. No spanner is required.

Reduced inventory costs

All clamp butterfly valve accessories, such as seals and actuations, are interchangeable with those of the LKB butterfly valve. This reduces the need for a large spare part inventory. The width of the valve clamp end, for instance, is equal to the width of the LKB butterfly valve flange; this enables the same handles and actuators to be used for both valves. Similarly, the E dimension of the CBFV is equal to E dimension on the LKB butterfly valve to ensure that these two valves can use the same disc and upper bushing.

Manual or automatic operation

The clamp butterfly valve can be operated either in manual mode or automatic mode. For manual operation, the valve can be complemented with various handles, including a handle capable of a full 360-degreerotation into any position and a multi-position lockable handle for manual operation. Or it can be equipped with an Alfa Laval pneumatic actuator and ThinkTop valve sensing and control unit for automatic operation.

Compatibility with existing systems

With its 360-degree rotation of the actuator, the clamp butterfly valve has very low space requirements and easily fits into existing stainless steel fluid handling systems, especially those where LKB butterfly valves are already in use. Because the modular CBFV is compatible with the LKB butterfly valve, all seals, discs, bushings, handles and valve sensing and control units are interchangeable.

Construction

The Alfa Laval clamp butterfly valve (CBFV) consists of two valve body halves, valve disc, bushings for the stem and seal ring. The valve is assembled by means of two clamps on the ferrule. One actuator size covers all valve sizes and is available in two versions, LKLA and LKLA-T.

Operating principle

The clamp butterfly valve is designed either for automatic or manual operation. The actuator can be rotated 360 degrees incrementally to any position.

Automatic operation
The automated clamp butterfly valve is controlled from a remote location by means of compressed air using a pneumatic actuator. The actuator controls the axial movement of a piston, which rotates the shaft 90 degrees.

The torque exerted by the actuator increases when the valve disc makes contact with the valve sealing ring to ensure effective closing. The actuator is compatible with the LKB butterfly valve and is available in three standard versions: normally closed (NC), normally open (NO) and air/air activated (A/A).

Manual operation
The CBFV is controlled manually by means of a handle for easy, flexible operation. The handle mechanically locks the valve in its open or closed position.

Full range, full spectrum

The Alfa Laval LKB butterfly valve range consists of modular units designed to meet the full spectrum of requirements at working pressures from full vacuum to 10 bar. All valves are FDA-compliant, designed for use in a wide range of stainless steel pipe systems, and can be built to comply with virtually any installation standard.

Reliable performance

LKB butterfly valves come with several features that ensure reliability performance. A highly polished stainless steel disc with surface smoothness down to Ra<0.8 µm and bearing bushes clipped onto the disc stems prevent metal-to-metal abrasion and ensure smoother disc movement.

The stem diameter provides particularly low flow resistance, ensuring gentle product treatment for low and medium-viscosity products. In addition, Alfa Laval seal technology provides greater thermal stability, better chemical resistance and improved tensile strength.

Manual or automated control

Alfa Laval LKB butterfly valves can be complemented with lockable handle for manual operation of with an actuator and in combination with either a valve indication unit or Alfa Laval ThinkTop valve sensing and control units.

For manual operation: Alfa Laval provides a complete range of handles, including a multi-position lockable handle.

For automated operation: A selection of different actuators is available; special double-spring design enables application of maximum torque to the valve disc at breakaway and seal positions. This makes it easy to integrate these valve units into larger systems operated from a central point, and/or to operate them automatically for maximum efficiency.

LKB butterfly valve range

The Alfa Laval LKB butterfly valve range consists of the following modular units that can easily be mounted in complex cluster set-ups alongside valves of other types.

  • LKB and LKB-2 with standard spring-loaded locking handle for straightforward manual operation with a pulling/turning movement. LKB is used for ISO connection and the LKB-2 is used for DIN connection.
  • LKB-F for flange connections to easily remove the valve body without dismantling piping setups. For both ISO and DIN.

Construction

The valve consists of two valve body halves, valve disc, bushes for the stem and seal ring. The valve is assembled by means of screws and nuts. The handle is fitted onto the valve by means of a cap/block system and screw.

Operating principle

The standard Alfa Laval LKB butterfly valve range is designed either for automatic or manual operation.

Automatic operation for LKB and LKB-F

The automated LKB butterfly valve is controlled from remote location by means of compressed air using a pneumatic actuator. The actuator controls the axial movement of a piston, which rotates the shaft 90°. The torque exerted by the actuator increases when the valve disc contacts the valve sealing ring, to ensure effective closing. The actuator is available in three standard versions: normally closed (NC), normally open (NO) and air/air activated (A/A).

Manual operation for LKB and LKB-2

The LKB butterfly valve is controlled manually by means of a handle. The handle mechanically locks the valve in its open or closed position. For the LKB and LKB-2, the handles for the valve sizes DN125 and DN150 enable valve adjusment and can be locked in two intermediate positions to regulate the flow rate.

APPLICATIONS

Alfa Laval’s Tri-Clover LKB butterfly valve is designed for use in a broad spectrum of applications and working pressures. These FDA-compliant valves provide reliable performance and smooth operation. The stem diameter provides particularly low flow resistance, ensuring gentle product treatment for low and medium-viscosity products.

WORKING PRINCIPLE

The LKB is either remotely controlled by means of an actuator or manually operated by means of a handle. The actuator is made in three standard versions, normally-closed (NC), normally-open (NO), and air/air-activated (A/A). Intelligent reliability and control for butterfly valves

The Alfa Laval Unique Control LKB is an integrated valve control unit and actuator with an enhanced hygienic one-piece design. Tested to over a million strokes without service, Unique Control LKB is the most durable actuator available today. Its well-built design with tough composite casing withstands most harsh environments.

IP66/IP67-approved, the Unique Control LKB features superior technology, shape and material, which prevent condensation and the penetration of dust, water and other particles into the unit. This contributes to maximum hygiene and effectively eliminates problems associated with corrosion, external contamination and the effects of physical impact, including vibration, pressure shock, frost, heat, UV radiation and environments polluted with grease, oil and chemicals, without disrupting production.

In addition, the Unique Control LKB provides integrated automation with a clear 360° visible indication and an air surveillance system for reliable real-time monitoring of the operating air pressure. Instead of being controlled by a conventional mechanical spring like most butterfly valve actuators, an air spring controls the actuator of the Unique Control LKB. This, combined with the intelligent capabilities of the sensing and control unit, enables operation at a lower air pressure and delivers significant benefits in terms of durability, reliability and more system uptime.

Simplified setup for butterfly valve control

Push n’ Play self-configuration gets the Unique Control LKB up and running five times faster than conventional solutions. Simply press one button and the Unique Control, which is compatible with both digital and AS interfaces, configures and calibrates itself to ensure the best possible mode of operation. This convenient one-button process saves time and money.

One size actuator fits all LKB butterfly valves

For ultimate convenience, a single actuator is suitable for most valve solutions thanks to the high torque, which enables the unit to fit any valve size. In addition, it is easy to switch from normally open (NO) to normally closed (NC) and vice versa onsite. This one-size-fits-every-valve design makes engineering, ordering, installation, onsite configuration and stock keeping easy.

Easy upgrade for butterfly valve actuators

The Unique Control fits all manual and actuated butterfly valves in the Alfa Laval LKB range. Existing installations are easy to upgrade to Unique Control LKB; all that is required is a new bracket. Simply order the optional bracket kit for that particular LKB valve size in order to mount the Unique Control unit easily onto any of the 1” to 4” and DN25 – DN100 valves in the LKB valve range.

Valve control and automation range

The Unique Control LKB offers intelligent automation and control of Alfa Laval LKB butterfly valves and complements our broad range of valve control and automation solutions.

Operating principle

The Unique Control LKB uses an air spring, which enables the unit to be operated at a significantly lower air pressure compared to control units using a conventional mechanical spring. This reduces wear thereby eliminating the need for maintenance.

When air enters the Unique Control LKB, the built-in solenoid valve diverts the flow either above or below the piston. The helix inside the piston transfers the vertical movement into a rotation ensuring smooth valve operation. The design enables the Unique Control LKB to operate at an air pressure of only 3 bar.

Integrated air surveillance system

A built-in pressure sensor monitors the air supply. In the event of a critical drop in air pressure, the actuator sends a warning signal, but continues to operate. In the event that the supply of air is cut off, the actuator also sends a warning signal, maintains its position and continues to operate after resolving the problem.

Switching from NC to NO

Changing the normally closed contact to normally open position is easy. Simply open the top cover, loosen the screws, lift up and rotate the top 180°, then re-assemble it.
