Economic mixproof valves

Alfa Laval offers two double-seal mixproof valves: The Alfa Laval SMP-BC and the aseptic version, SPC-BCA. The SMP valves enable the flow of two different media through the same valve simultaneously without any risk of cross-contamination. This increases operating efficiencies and significantly reduces operating costs.

High application flexibility

Based on a modular structure, SMP mixproof valves have several valve bodies and components that can be combined in various ways. These self-draining mixproof valves can, for instance, be configured as stop valves and changeover valves.

Plus SMP mixproof valves are constructed from a series of base components, which enables valves to easily be configured to meet different requirements in sanitary and aseptic applications.

Simplified valve maintenance

Few moving parts, a top-loaded plug, a maintenance-friendly actuator make SMP mixproof valves easy to disassemble for quick, straightforward maintenance.

SMP mixproof valve range

The Alfa Laval SMP mixproof valve range offers two standard cost-effective alternatives to the premium Alfa Laval Unique mixproof valve range.

  • SMP-BC mixproof valve for applications that require additional safety, leak detection and CIP
  • SMP-BCA mixproof valve for aseptic applications

Aseptic version

The aseptic version of Alfa Laval’s SMP mixproof valve is called SMP-BCA, which is designed for use under mixproof aseptic conditions and sterilization involving high temperatures.

The straight forward design keeps liquids separate by using two seals on the same plug, with a leakage chamber in between.

The PTFE / rubber diaphragm following the movement of the plug in the upper section of the valve body ensures that there is no increase in the concentration of microorganisms in the product during processing.

Construction

The construction of the Alfa Laval SMP mixproof valve range varies, depending on the valve model (SMP-BC and SMP-BCA).

The SMP-BC mixproof valve consists of an actuator, bonnet, plug and valve bodies. Three versions are available: a shut-off valve with one valve body, a shut-off valve with two valve bodies, and a changeover valve with three valve bodies. Clamp rings and a plug clip system secure the valve bodies to the actuator. The clamp ring enables you to turn the valve in any direction.

The SMP-BCA mixproof valve consists of the same valve components as the SMP-BC, but is fitted with a PTFE/EPDM diaphragm designed to prevent contamination from external sources and to withstand high temperature. This makes the SMP-BCA ideal for use under aseptic conditions.

Operating principles

The Alfa Laval SMP mixproof valves are controlled from remote location by means of compressed air. The SMP-BC and SMP-BCA mixproof valves have different operating principles, which are described below.

SMP-BC mixproof valve

The SMP-BC mixproof valve is fitted with two small pneumatic normally open (NO) valves, a detecting valve and a CIP-valve.

The valve plug has two seals, which form an atmospheric leakage chamber. Any product leakage is discharged through the detecting valve. The leakage chamber may be cleaned by supplying CIP into the detecting valve. The SMP-BC is insensitive to water hammer in the product line above the plug.

For changeover valves, a single seal plug separates the lower product lines.

SMP-BCA aseptic mixproof valve

The SMP-BCA aseptic mixproof valve is a normally closed (NC) valve with a proven PTFE/EPDM diaphragm. The special designed aseptic diaphragm hermetically seals against intrusion from the atmosphere and ensures full protection against the effects of microorganisms. It also prevents product build-up on the product contact surface.

The valve plug has two seals, which form an atmospheric leakage chamber. Any product leakage is discharged through the detecting valve. The leakage chamber may be cleaned by supplying CIP into the detecting valve.

Two small pneumatic normally open (NO) valves enable a sterile barrier to be established in the leakage chamber through the continuous application of steam. The chamber must be clean and sterile when the main valve is closed.

For changeover valves, a single seal plug separates the lower product lines but does not require the use of a sterile barrier in the leakage chamber.

The Alfa Laval Unique mixproof CP-3 valve faithfully lives up to its pedigree, offering dairy processors optimum hygiene and legendary performance. A noteworthy innovation: the Unique mixproof CP-3 valve features a reduced-diameter leak detection vent that make the valve more compact and lightweight.

An efficient, sustainable mixproof valve

The Alfa Laval Unique mixproof CP-3 valve is engineered with the latest efficiency and sustainability principles in mind. A fast and efficient actuator requires a smaller volume of air to execute seat lift and seat push, resulting in low air consumption and minimal CIP fluid loss.

The valve seat is designed with throttling edges on the upper and lower seat plugs, which accelerates cleaning fluid to improve CIP efficiency and uses the absolute minimum amount of CIP fluid.

Reduce cost of ownership and downtime

The Alfa Laval Unique mixproof CP-3 valve provides lower cost of ownership and downtime. Only two seals are located in the valve chamber, which enables faster cleaning of the valve during seat lift and requires less seal spares. When the valve is open during actuation, the lower seat seal is not exposed to wear, resulting in longer seal life. Each valve has a modular design and shares common components with standard Alfa Laval Unique PMO valves of similar size.

The Unique mixproof CP-3 valve not only complies with 3-A Sanitary Standard 85-02 for seat-lift cleaning, but also complies with the FDA Pasteurized Milk Ordinance (PMO), while covering all mixproof dairy, food and beverage applications that require 1½” through  6” port sizes.

Construction

The Alfa Laval Unique mixproof CP-3 valve is specifically designed for user flexibility and is configurable for all hygienic dairy, food, and beverage applications.

The Unique mixproof CP-3 valve not only complies with 3-A Sanitary Standard 85-02 for seat-lift cleaning, but also complies with the FDA Pasteurized Milk Ordinance (PMO), while covering all mixproof dairy, food and beverage applications that require 1½” through 6” port sizes.

It consists of a valve body, two independent balanced valve plugs/seals that form a leakage chamber between them, actuator with seat lift, position-detectable upper and lower valve seats and a yoke-mounted external sensor.

To separate the two liquids, the valve has two independent plug seals. The space between the two seals forms an atmospheric vent chamber. When the valve is open, the chamber is closed. The product can then flow from one line to the other without spillage. The valve can easily be cleaned and protected against the effects of water hammer according to the specific requirements of the process and the configuration of the valve.

Possible configurations

The Alfa Laval Unique Mixproof CP-3 offers a wide range of options, including:

Lower flush

The Alfa Laval lower flush option ensures CIP of the lower sealing element and the OD of the lower plug during seat push. This option efficiently cleans the lower seal in the housing without the need for external CIP connections, supporting continuous processing.

Balancing flexibility

The Unique Mixproof CP-3 valve has a lower balanced plug to avoid product mix, even in the event of pressure spikes in the system. The upper plug can be configured with or without a balancer depending on the required performance.

SpiralClean

The Alfa Laval SpiralClean system makes it possible to clean the upper and lower plugs and leakage chamber by external CIP connections. The

system cleans more efficiently, uses less cleaning fluid by ensuring that a directional flow of CIP fluid reaches all the surfaces in much less time than with conventional systems.

Spiral Clean of the leakage chamber is not depending on a special type of plug configuration, but can be added to any of the available plug configurations.

Size flexibility (mixed housing)

The valve body can be configured with mixed sizes. The body sections can be fully combined, including the full range of 1-1/2″ through 6″ sizes.

Seat lift and Seat push

Seat lift and seat push enable cleaning of the plug seals of either the upper or lower plug individually. The Unique Mixproof CP-3 range is available in a variety of configurations, including two separate actuator versions. An actuator with both upper seat lift and lower seat push or an actuator without any seat lift/push operations only one period.

The Unique Mixproof CP-3 modular range offers balanced and unbalanced plugs, seat lift/push, CIP for the plugs and leakage chambers and any combination in between.

Unique HighClean meets your processing needs when dealing with sticky products. SpiralClean ensures thorough cleaning of the spindles, upper and lower plugs and in the leakage chamber. With balanced upper and lower plug, the configuration of this valve protects against the effects of high pressure and water hammer.

 

Unique UltraClean meets the highest demands for hygienic processing of sticky products, products with high content of solids, or applications that require close-to-aseptic conditions. It features an actuator with integrated seat lift, balanced upper and lower plugs and SpiralClean.

Unique Mixproof Tank Outlet is the choice for standard tank installations. Seat lift during normal cleaning procedures cleans the plugs and seats. A balanced plug protects against water hammer when closing in the direction of product flow.

 

Unique Mixproof Horizontal Tank Outlet Valve specially designed for horizontal mounting directly on the tank wall. It improves cleanliness of the horizontal tank connections and ensures that no area of the tank inlet or tank outlet is left uncleaned. The valve insures 100% drainability of the tank and for the 4” and 6” it offers the ability to handle particles up to 45 mm.

 

Unique Mixproof Large Particle Valve. For applications with very large particles or highly viscous fluids, this valve offers the same basic advantages as Unique mixproof valves but are specially designed with large openings up to 45 mm in diameter.

You get the full benefit of using Unique mixproof valves by combining them with Alfa Laval ThinkTop and ThinkTop Basic valve sensing and control units.

When the valve is open, the leakage chamber is closed. The product can then flow from one line to the other without spillage. The valve can easily be cleaned and protected against the effects of water hammer according to the specific requirements of the process and the configuration of the valve. (There is no product spillage during valve operation).

Unique mixproof valve - How it works

SpiralClean system

To ensure the hygienic operating condition of its Unique mixproof valve range, Alfa Laval offers its SpiralClean system to clean the upper and lower balanced plugs and leakage chamber of the valves. Using less cleaning fluid, utilities and time, SpiralClean cleans more thoroughly and efficiently than conventional cleaning devices. All external CIP systems for Unique mixproof valves include the SpiralClean design as standard.

Another big benefit: SpiralClean enables the Unique mixproof valve to operate under aseptic-like conditions, creating a steam barrier to the atmosphere upon applying steam to the CIP pipes.

Unique Mixproof Horizontal Tank Valve

The Unique Mixproof HT valve provides a state of the art solution when there is no CIP pressure or flow from the tank side to clean the seat and plug. The valve is self-cleaning, thanks to two Cleaning-in-Place (CIP) nozzles. The first nozzle is designed specifically for plug cleaning. This double-acting nozzle projects cleaning solution through the tank connection, ensuring complete cleaning of the seat contact surfaces as well as the shadow area of the tank port.

The second is a rotating CIP nozzle incorporated into the unit for optimum cleaning of the full-bore leakage chamber. The design of the single valve body makes it suitable to weld directly on the tank or to connect it via a Tri-clamp.

The 4” and 6” models feature a 45-mm opening, which enables the passage of very large particles or efficient handling of high viscosity fluids.

Unique Mixproof Large Particle Valve

Unique Mixproof LP is remote-controlled by means of compressed air. The valve is a normally closed (NC) valve. It is as standard supplied seat lift, which enables handling of two different products at the same time, or safe handling of one product while seat-lift cleaning operations are being conducted in the other portion of the valve – all without any risk of cross-contamination.

The 6” valve is as standard also equipped with balanced lower plug to protect against the effects of high pressure and water hammer. The 4” valve is, in order to accommodate 1½” (45mm) particles, not supplied with balanced lower plug. The 4” is however as standard equipped with a boost actuator to accommodate a product pressure of up to 10 bar.
